Saturday 21st September, the much anticipated start of the 2024/25 season for Newcastle 2nd, 3rds, 4th and 5ths. With the 4s securing a draw the 5s playing some excellent hockey it was time for the clash of the 2s v 3s, black v white and mother v daughter! Tunes were blasting in the changing rooms, Bobi enjoying the fact that she knew them and Chell turning them down when DJ Becca left the room it was like we’d all never been away from hockey madness.
The game started at a quick pace and actually never slowed down, both teams eager and keen to be 1st the ball and and play attacking hockey. The problem with attacking at pace and all going up is it can leave gaps and we had to rely on Zoe and Crags making some crucial tackles and ‘The Boss’ Amy closing down the shots as 3s found themselves alone in the D. The 2s took the lead midway through the 1st half and started to settle and play some lovely passing hockey.
Half time, and we were exhausted so were happy to let Becks do the talking. Positive words from Becks with small simple things that we could work on in the 2nd half, shame Left Foot is too difficult for some of the players to grasp! Ready to start the 2nd half, line up sorted until our leader decided she wanted a rest - Plan B at the ready!
Both teams continued to press for goals and due to the 2s pressure and determination for the ball they won a few short corners, converting one (after a shocking mistake). With the score at 2 -nil, the 2s stated to settle more on the ball and kept clam heads to create a few more chances, but the 3s were solid and determined not let anymore in. The full time whistle went, what a game, what great start for the 2. All should be proud of the shift they put in and look forward to season ahead.
Today was about more than a league game, it was about coming together as a club and celebrating what we have. It was for Lina a friend to many and someone who’ll will be remembered. We are an amazing club and we should be proud to pull on our NHC tops and play for our team mates and remember to always be kind to each other.
